HOST HIGHLIGHTS: BIG TEMP
Good radio doesn't happen by accident. Host Highlights is a series celebrating the SIBLING RADIO hosts who are putting in the work, setting the vibe, and keeping our broadcast alive.
Get to know the people behind your favourite shows.
First up, we’ve got Big Temp from Blast FX (Formerly Big Temp Talks).
What was the very first record or song that made you fall in love with music?
That’s a tough one, music has been such a big part of my life since I was a little kid. The first single I remember buying with my own money was “Gettin Jiggy With It” by Will Smith! I must have been about 8 years old and it was never out of my CD player.
What is the most memorable (or chaotic) thing that has ever happened to you while trying to record your show?
The first time I put music into one of my SIBLING RADIO shows I had no idea about how to balance the levels of each track. I was naive to think that all music would be the same volume when imported, so I had to spend ages afterwards ensuring that the show didn’t deafen listeners or blow out my speakers. If you could see my screens when I’m editing you’d see just how many “How do I…” google searches I have going on!
Every host has a "pre-show" routine. What’s the one thing you have to do before you get on the mic/decks?
This has changed for me recently. When I started the show I was always drinking hot lemon and ginger tea (with added honey of course) to make sure I could talk for as long as I needed to. But now it’s more of a case of cracking open a cold crisp can of Pepsi Max and making sure I’ve no distractions so I can really focus on the flow of the show.
What is one artist or song you think is criminally underrated and deserves more airtime?
You’re asking someone whose hobby is going to see small hardcore shows about artists that deserve more airtime haha. I could say so many!
However, I have to say that it’s my boys in Asidhara that deserve it more than anyone right now. They’re a hardcore crossover band from South Wales that blend elements of hardcore music with thrash metal. They’re also some of the nicest lads I’ve had the pleasure of calling my friends. They went through it with an old label that screwed them over, but they recently released their debut, self-titled, LP on “The Coming Strife Records” and we’re all stoked for them. They deserve their flowers, go listen to them, go bang your head!
What’s your favourite ever video game and what’s your biggest critique of it?
The Legend Of Zelda Majora’s Mask. Controversial I know as many would say Ocarina Of Time. However the more I think on it, and the more I play older Zelda games, the more I realise that Majora’s Mask did so much that it’s predecessor didn’t. It’s so much darker in tone, the gameplay feels tighter, the stories feel more involved (basically every character has a story you can interact with), and the fact it was made in such a short space of time too! Granted, Ocarina Of Time is the GOAT but Majora’s Mask is my favourite for sure.
My one big critique of the game? The camera controls have not aged well. Back in the N64 days we had one analogue stick, so camera controls weren’t really implemented in the best ways. Granted this got fixed on the 3DS version, but back in 2000 we had no choice but to deal with it.
